Kennametal to exhibit at 2009 China International Machine Tool Show

(LATROBE, PA) – Kennametal Inc., a global leader in tooling and engineering services with world headquarters in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, USA, will be exhibiting its latest innovations and new products at the 11th China International Machine Tool Show (CIMT), April 6-11, 2009. Kennametal is located at Stand 030 in Hall 2 at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing.

Among the high-performance, productivity-enhancing products from Kennametal will be the new Beyond™ line of turning products, Y-TECH™ drills, the new KSEM Plus™ holemaking system, Dodeka™ milling cutters, and other tools for improving manufacturing productivity and reducing costs. New Chinese-language master catalogs of complete Kennametal turning and milling products also will be available.

Beyond insert

Beyond™ is an entire platform of new high-performance Kennametal turning products -- a complete line of 11 new grades and 40 new geometries applicable to steel, stainless steel, and cast-iron turning applications. A new post-coat surface treatment improves edge toughness, reliability, and depth-of-cut notch resistance, and micro-polishes the surface to reduce friction and workpiece sticking (BUE). A fine-grained alumina layer allows for increases in cutting speed, improving productivity and reliability at high cutting temperatures. “Depending on the application, field tests have shown anywhere from 30% to 300% improvement,” says Ujjwal (UJ) Baid, Kennametal Senior Product Manager. Beyond platforms for milling and holemaking are on their way, too, he adds.

Y-Tech drill

Another new Kennametal product is the Y-TECH™ drill, with unique geometry designed for higher-quality holes in duplex stainless steel, titanium, Inconel®, and other hard-to-machine materials.  Y-TECH is a three-margin drill featuring an uneven flute-to-flute design. Traditional symmetrical, two-cutting-edge, two-margin drills produce a pendulum motion upon entering the workpiece. Y-TECH’s asymmetrical design helps the tool maintain diameter throughout the cut. Eliminating the pendulum motion not only improves hole quality, but also significantly reduces wear and tear on the tool, extending tool life.

Also new on the holemaking side is the KSEM PLUS™. With a solid-steel drill shank and various carbide insert geometries to choose from, KSEM PLUS combines the benefits of a modular drill system with those of an indexable drill, resulting in high speeds, high feeds, and low consumable costs. “We’ve seen outstanding field test results – higher metal-removal rates and customer productivity increases of up to 100 percent,” says Allen Poponick, global machining manager for holemaking at Kennametal. “The aspect of using one drill body for different sizes of drill heads offers significant cost-cutting aspects as well.”

Dodeka milling cutter

Milling innovations from Kennametal include the new Dodeka milling cutters and inserts, designed for demanding face-milling applications in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, ductile iron, and other materials. With 12 cutting edges per insert, the unique Dodeka geometry generates low cutting forces, resulting in increased performance per edge. The inserts are also designed for ease of use, with a single screw for insert changing and indexing.  HD roughing inserts and new wiper inserts in the Dodeka family exhibit excellent chip-forming and evacuation characteristics along with high accuracy.

Setting the International Standard

KM quick-change system

For the past 20-plus years, the KM™ quick-change tooling system from Kennametal has been providing manufacturers a cost-effective method for reducing set-up time and increasing productivity. Now the Kennametal system – clamping units that mount into machine tools along with interchangeable cutting heads -- is being recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as a new ISO standard – ISO 26622.

“Being modular, quick-change tooling like the Kennametal KM system is central to an effective machining strategy because it allows manufacturers to automate tool-changing, a process that has always been considered manual-only,” says Curtis Rellick, global product manager for tooling systems, Kennametal. “Quick-change tooling addresses demands for higher quality, lower costs, and improved on-time deliveries, which are only getting stronger. When they lock a KM system into their machine tools, Kennametal customers around the world are assured it meets ISO standards for dimensions and tolerances.”

New Chinese-language master catalogs will also be available from the Kennametal stand at CIMT 2009. Turning and milling product catalogs cover complete Kennametal product offerings in these areas along with technical specifications, troubleshooting guides, and other useful data.
